ADHD With Sensory Overload...Children that cannot cope
ADHD Sensory Overload in Children.. that seem out of control
By Dr Threlfo, Osteopath – Back Care Gold Coast, Nerang
Children diagnosed with ADHD or Autism often experience the world in ways that are overwhelming to their senses. Everyday environments—filled with noise, light, and movement—can trigger intense discomfort, anxiety, or even shutdowns. As an osteopath working with families on the Gold Coast, I’ve seen firsthand how sensory overload impacts these children, and how gentle, holistic approaches can make a meaningful difference.
⭐Sound Sensitivity: When Noise Becomes Too Much
One of the most common challenges is auditory hypersensitivity. Children may struggle with:
- The roar of trucks or motorbikes
- Loud chatter in shopping centres or school assemblies
- Sudden sounds like alarms or barking dogs
These noises aren’t just annoying—they can feel physically painful or emotionally distressing. Children might cover their ears, cry, or retreat from social settings altogether.
⭐ Light Sensitivity: The Glare That Hurts
Visual stimuli can be equally overwhelming. Fluorescent lighting, screen glare, or bright sunlight may cause:
- Headaches or eye strain
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability or fatigue
In clinical settings, I’ve observed children squinting, shielding their eyes, or becoming agitated under harsh lighting. Creating low-stimulation environments is key to helping them feel safe and regulated.
⭐ADHD and Autism: A Closer Look at the Numbers
ADHD and Autism often co-occur, and both involve differences in sensory processing. With ADHD:
- In children, the diagnosis ratio is approximately 4 boys to every 1 girl
- In adults, the ratio narrows to 2:1, as more women are identified later in life
Girls may present differently—often with internalised symptoms like anxiety or inattentiveness—leading to underdiagnosis in early years.
⭐ Low Level Laser Therapy: A Gentle, Supportive Option
At Back Care Gold Coast in Nerang, I’ve incorporated Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) into my osteopathic treatments. This non-invasive, light-based therapy has shown promise in calming the nervous system and supporting children with sensory challenges.
LLLT may help by:
- Reducing inflammation and tension in the body
- Supporting neurological regulation
- Enhancing relaxation and resilience to sensory input
While more research is needed, many families report improvements in sleep, mood, and sensory tolerance after consistent sessions.
⭐A Holistic Approach to Care
Supporting children with ADHD or Autism isn’t about fixing them—it’s about understanding their unique needs and helping them thrive. Osteopathy offers a gentle, body-based approach that complements other therapies and empowers families with practical tools.
If your child struggles with sensory overload, I invite you to explore how osteopathy and Low Level Laser Therapy might help. Together, we can create a calmer, more comfortable world for them to grow in.
