Tests for Bursitis
What is Bursitis
Bursa (when inflamed called Bursitis) are small fluid filled sacs that act as cushions under the muscles and tendons as they attatch to bones...they are like individual shock absorbers.
- Left is one shoulder bursa, There are a number of bursa's in the shoulder region.
- Bursa's are around the major joints, ie shoulders, elbows, hips, knees.
- The body has 150 Bursa.
- When they become inflamed they feel hot and are swollen. You will lose joint mobility.
- The main symptoms are deep aches, and the pains are worse at night.
Tests for Bursitis
A physical examination is done, looking for heat and swelling. Xrays and MRI will detect swelling and inflammation. Blood test can be orded looking for infections in the bursa.
Treatment
Give the area a rest, and avoid activities that aggrevate the region. Most bursa's will improve with rest.
- Elevate the region if possible
- Use ice and heat to help the pain.
- Pain remedies Ibuprofen or similar products, take as needed
- Cortcosteroids injections are often very effective.
However long standing chronic bursitis where pain persists and none of the above has helped I have found Vit C 3 Grams (from a chemist) take daily for at least 8 weeks will help resolve long standing pain usually within 10 days, you do need to take for 8 weeks though. The medical world do not support Vit C approach. I suggest it as an option that you might consider.
I use a Lazer light and this helps to reduce swelling. After the Lazer light treatments you can start to introduce isometric stretches and then gently improve joint mobility again. If you have questions please feel free to contact me. Dr Jeff.
