Common Symptoms of Lower Back Pain..Osteopath Nerang.
How an Osteopath can help.
In the clinic I see lots of lower back pain patients. Usually they come in with acute pain, finding it difficult to walk.
A common cause is poor lifting. I see the weekend warrior doing yard work or home repairs and in they come hardly able to stand. Another common cause can be sports injuries. At Back Care Gold Coast, these patients come in on Monday looking for relief.
Back pain can seriously affect your quality of life.
I have to understand the cause of the pain; that's the first step. From there, I can make a plan of treatment and then work towards long-term relief. As an osteopath, I have to look beyond symptoms to uncover what’s really going on. So let's look at some typical culprits. Muscle strains, disc injuries, and prolapsed discs are common ones.
You bent, you twist, you lift, or maybe just sat too long—and now your back’s protesting. Muscle strain is one of the most frequent causes of back pain. It happens when the muscles in your lower back are overstretched or torn, or maybe its poor posture, or maybe its sudden movements, or it could be repetitive exercises.
How it feels: Pain is often localised, with stiffness, tenderness, or muscle spasms. You often feel worse in the morning after inactivity, sleeping, and often simple movements can make it worse.
How osteopathy helps: We use gentle hands-on techniques to release tension, improve circulation, and support healing. We’ll also guide you through posture tweaks and exercises to prevent future flare-ups.
⭐1. Disc Bulge: Pressure on the Problem
Discs are small pads of cartilage between each vertebra. They are spongy and act as shock absorbers. They are often sprained from lifting and twisting, they can also tear. After multiple small tears, a prolapse (bubble) forms in a disc. These prolapses can push into the spinal cord or against the spinal nerves as they travel out to the body. If this happens when you cough or sneeze, the pain is sharp and can shoot down a leg (hello, sciatica).
What it feels like: Pain that radiates down one leg, numbness, tingling, or weakness. Sometimes, the bulge is silent and only shows up on scans.
How osteopathy helps: We focus on lessening mechanical stress, improving mobility, and supporting muscular recovery. Our goal is to help you move better and feel stronger—without aggravating the disc.
⭐ 2. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction:
When the Pelvic region aches (the area below the lumbar vertebra) frequently it is a sacrum problem, it looses its alignment within the pelvic region. The whole area is held together with strong ligaments. If they strain or weaken, one-sided lower back pain develops. This can happen from heavy lifting, while twisting.
Pregnancy: we see these pelvic joints start to stretch, often they ache as the baby grows. Mothers can get great relief with proper care.
What it feels like: Localised pain on one side of the lower back or buttock, sometimes radiating into the thigh. They may worsen after standing for long periods or after changing positions.
How osteopathy helps: We work to restore balance and movement around the pelvis and lumbar spine. Treatments will include joint mobilisation, muscle release, and tailored exercises to stabilise the area.
⭐ 3. Facet Joint Arthritis: Stiff Spine Syndrome
Facet joints are small and sit at the back of your spine, allowing twisting and bending. If spinal alignment is poor, they can become irritated or arthritic over time—a condition known as facet joint arthropathy.
What it feels like: Symptoms are usually worse in the mornings due to inactivity. When you put the spine under load, bending and lifting become painful.
How osteopathy helps: We treat surrounding muscle tension, support healthier joints, and help you maintain good mobility with gentle movements.
⭐ 4. Anxiety and Emotional Tension: The Hidden Trigger
It’s easy to overlook, but stress plays a major role in back pain. When you’re anxious or overwhelmed, your muscles tighten—especially around the neck, shoulders, and lower back. Interestingly, financial worry can cause lower back pain. Over time, this tension can lead to chronic back pain that doesn't seem to resolve, it keeps returning!!
What it feels like: A persistent ache, tightness, or fatigue in the back, often without a clear physical cause, the unknown cause is the interesting part.
How osteopathy helps: We take a holistic approach, tackling both the physical and emotional components of pain. Treatment may include relaxation techniques. NET is a specialized technique that releases accumulated stress that builds up and that we cannot seem to get past. We seek to help you unwind and heal.
