5 Common Causes of Knee Pain...Nerang.
Causes of Knee pain and How Osteopathic Care Helps.
Knee pain can be very debilitating, and it hampers your lifestyle. The Knee acts as a hinge joint between the hip and the ankle, and it must be strong and flexible if we want to stay active. It helps us walk, run, climb, and jump. Knee pain often restricts walking up and down stairways and steep slopes.
- It can stop you from taking long walks unless you have a knee guard.
- They can cause pain at night when in bed.
- After long periods of sitting, they often ache.
The most common causes of Knee Pain
Osteoarthritis. It is a degenerative condition. In the knee, we see this degeneration as wear and tear in the bones and the cartilage. It is clearly visible on X-rays.
Ligament tears and weakness. 5 main ligaments stabilise the knee. One is at the front, one is at the back, two are on the sides, and one runs through the knee itself. Sports injuries often sprain and tear these ligaments.
Tendons. A tendon joins a muscle to a bone. So the calf and thigh muscles have many tendons attaching around the knee.
Bursitis. Is inflammation of a Bursa. A Bursa is a small, spongy, fatty pad. They act as shock absorbers and sit under a tendon they, reduce wear and tear. When a bursa becomes inflamed, we call this bursitis.
Meniscus Injury. A meniscus is a thick cartilage pad placed between the two knee bones. They are usually injured by heavy sport contact or years of manual labour, it wears out, and then the knee compartment becomes unstable.
Other Joint Problems. If you develop chronic hip or ankle problems, more load goes on the knee, which can lead to knee degeneration.
Can Osteopathic Treatment Help?
To A Doctor, all the causes above become part of our evaluation, as we try to understand the reason for your pain. We will review treatment techniques, then develop a strategy to help you manage pain, this usually includes strengthening exercises.
The Benefits of Laser Light.
I have used Laser Light for many years, it is a pain management technique, and it is great for reducing swelling. It restores what is called 'soft tissue'....anything that is not bone, and 80% of the body mass is soft tissue! Laser supports natural healing, is non invasive and patients 'love it'.
